What Is MiSight® and How Can It Help Slow Childhood Myopia

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is becoming increasingly common in children. If your child struggles to see distant objects clearly—such as the classroom board or road signs—it may be more than just a vision inconvenience. Progressive myopia can increase the risk of serious eye health problems later in life.

At Life Vision Eyecare, we’re proud to offer MiSight® 1-day contact lenses, an FDA-approved treatment designed not only to correct your child’s vision, but also to slow the progression of myopia.

Understanding Childhood Myopia

Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back, causing light to focus in front of the retina rather than directly on it. In children, myopia often worsens year after year as their eyes continue to grow. Higher levels of myopia are associated with increased risks of:

  • Retinal detachment
  • Glaucoma
  • Myopic macular degeneration
  • Early cataracts

Managing myopia early is critical to protecting long-term eye health.

What Is MiSight®?

MiSight® 1 day is a soft, daily disposable contact lens specifically designed for children. Unlike standard contacts or glasses that only correct vision, MiSight lenses are engineered to slow myopia progression while providing clear, comfortable vision.

MiSight works by using a unique optical design that corrects distance vision while simultaneously signaling the eye to slow its elongation—the main cause of worsening myopia.

How Does MiSight Work?

MiSight lenses feature multiple treatment zones that:

  1. Correct blurry distance vision
  2. Create myopic defocus signals that help slow eye growth

This dual-action approach allows children to see clearly during daily activities while actively managing myopia progression.

Benefits of MiSight for Children

  • FDA-approved for myopia control
  • Clinically proven to slow myopia progression
  • Daily disposable—no cleaning or storage required
  • Comfortable and easy for children to wear
  • Allows kids to enjoy sports and activities without glasses

MiSight is typically prescribed for children ages 8–12, though eligibility is determined during a comprehensive eye exam.

MiSight Frequently Asked Questions (Q&A)

What age is MiSight approved for?

MiSight is FDA-approved for children ages 8 to 12 at the start of treatment.

Is MiSight safe for children?

Yes. MiSight lenses have undergone extensive clinical trials and are FDA-approved. Daily disposable lenses also reduce the risk of infection compared to reusable contacts.

Does MiSight replace glasses?

MiSight contact lenses correct vision just like glasses, but they also offer the added benefit of slowing myopia progression. Currently, MiSight does not correct for astigmatism. Some children may need to wear glasses while also wearing the MiSight lenses. In addition, it is always recommended to have a backup pair of glasses in case of an emergency.

How effective is MiSight?

Clinical studies show MiSight can slow myopia progression by an average of 50–60% compared to standard single-vision lenses.

How long does my child need to wear MiSight?

MiSight is typically worn daily over several years while the child’s eyes are still developing, and it is recommended to be worn at least up to the age of 18. Your optometrist will monitor progress and advise when treatment should stop.

Are MiSight lenses comfortable?

Yes. MiSight lenses are soft, breathable, and designed for all-day comfort. Most children adapt quickly.

Does insurance cover MiSight?

Coverage varies by insurance plan. Our team at Life Vision Eyecare is happy to help you understand your benefits and available payment options.
